Often when looking at high-definition TV’s, you will see some specifications in regards to HD resolution. Two terms you will often see are 1080i vs 1080p and 720p vs 1080p. These are representations of the amount of pixels on the screen. The pixels that makeup the screen are the small boxes of color that combine to make up the images on your screen. The exact pixels on a 1080p monitor will produce images at 1,920 x 1,080.
The 1,920 pixels are displayed horizontally across the screen while the 1,080 pixels are displayed vertically down the screen. The variation among 1080i and 1080p is actually in the method involving how the signal is sent from a source component or displayed on a HDTV screen. The “p” in 1080p refers to “Progressive”. 1080i vs 1080p Resolutions
A 1080p Television will present each line of resolution simultaneously, instead of sequentially like a CRT TV does. This means in progressive scanning, both the odd and even fields (all 1,080 pixel rows or pixel lines) that product the complete frame, are displayed together. This will produce a smoother looking picture, with less motion artifacts such as ghosting and jagged edges in the picture. This method, acknowledged as ‘progressive scanning’ will create a significantly sharper, smoother picture for you, and is especially beneficial for watching motion-related programs such as sporting events.
In regards to 1080i processing, each frame of video is displayed in alternative fields. The fields in 1080i are composed of 540 rows of pixels or lines of pixels running from the top to the bottom of the screen, with the odd fields (540 pixel lines) displayed first and the even fields (540 pixel lines) displayed second. Collectively, both fields produce a complete frame, consisting of all 1,080 pixel rows or lines, every 30th of a second.
With respect to a 1080i high-definition TV, the odd-numbered lines of resolution show up first and after that the even-numbered lines that continue the process within 1/30th of a second to complete the picture, totaling 1/60th of a second for the overall process to complete. It is a method that happens so fast, the eyes would not be able to distinguish the screen forming in that method.
1080i vs 1080p Final Analysis
In theory, 1080p is a better technology and more advanced than the 1080i processing. The differences between 1080i vs 1080p may not be noticeable by the naked eye. Now that you know what the differences are, let your eyes be the judge if you have a choice to make between 1080i vs 1080p HDTVs.
